Mires is the Central City in the plain with supply and administration centers. Everything you need is available: two big supermarkets and every saturday morning is a large market with local specialities and kind of a fleemarktet with clothes, stichery and weaving cloth. To the west of the market there is a "donkey parking place" for the farmes who still carry their product by the quadrups.
In Mires Municipality 11,434 people live (as of 2011) on an area of 182 km² in the southern part of the Heraklion Prefecture.
It borders on the Municipalities of Rouvas and Zaros to the north, Timbaki Municipality to the west, Gortina Municipality to the east and the Libyan Sea to the south. It comprises the following six Municipal Departments and their villages: Alithini, Andiskari (Plateia Peramata), Galia (Monochoro, Apolichnos, Rogdiana), Kastelli, Kousses (Listaros), Mires (Kapariana, Agios Andonios) Petrokefali, Pigaidakia (Kali Limenes) pombia, Roufas (Plouti) and Skourvoula.
