Protecting the environment in Lentas

The Environment part of the lentas-online.com homepage is especially important for anyone who “loves” this amazing part of Crete and visits it again and again, or is even lucky enough to call it home, or just thinking about travelling here for the first time. If the latter is true, we hope to see you here someday, and that you too will have the experience of “falling in love,” with this very special place.

That’s because here in the Environment section, you will find some ideas about things you can do to help protect the area – and keep it safe, beautiful, and inhabitable for not only human beings, but also its incredibly diverse flora and fauna.

When exploring these pages, please keep in mind: The articles are not about “pointing fingers,” or giving you a “list of things you have to do.” Especially if you have come here or are planning to on holidays, we understand that you most likely just want to relax, have a good time, and not worry about having to worry about things, or feel like you have to follow a lot of rules.

However, our hope here is to give you information, raise general awareness, provide some concrete ideas,  and encourage you to think about what you can do to protect the area while you are here – and into the future. Let us know what you think – and share your own ideas.

If you do not have the time or inclination to read everything here, the most important things we hope you keep in mind (both here and elsewhere) are:

  • Be very, very careful with fire. Remember, the wind here can turn one spark from you campfire, grill party, cigarette, or electric machine into a roaring wildfire. Smokers, please use ashtrays – always!)
  • Every drop of water is precious – please use it with great care.
  • Be responsible for your rubbish! (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, “Up-cycle, and pretty please: No littering!!!!
  • Respect the wildlife here – and encourage others to do it, too.

Finally, try and make sure that the only “footprints” you leave here are in the sand (or pebbles, or dust) – and in the beautiful memories you’ve made and shared here in this spectacular, naturally beautiful part of the wide, wide world.
